Kobe State of Mind

The quaint, lovely welcome of Kobe always awaits.

While the nightlife of Osaka and the splendor of both Kyoto and Nara often take centerstage when travelers talk about Kansai, Kobe though overlooked at times, offers a different brand of beauty. And if you need more reasons to frequent this must-visit strip tucked between mountains and the sea, here’s a few to get you settled into a Kobe state of mind.

Buzzing with Breweries

The Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum, found in Kōbe's Nada-gogō district, is a major sake-brewing center with a self-guided tour that takes guests through a fascinating look into traditional sake-making methods. Its historic, wood-built former brewery building houses life-sized models and also a complimentary sake tasting after the tour is done.

Offering old-world Charms

The Kitano Tenman-jinja and Ikuta Shrines offer a magnificent voyage to the past. Up a steep hill and past a stretch of souvenir and snack shops, Kitano is popular amongst youngers and students, however, it offers a magnificent view all the way across town to the Inland Sea. Ikuta, serene and still, offers plaques in front of the main building that commemorate generations of emperors' visits, while a forest and landmark camphor tree at the back provide a break from the city's bustle.

Harboring Great Memories

A big part of Kobe was devastated and a lot of renovation was needed to get the city back on its feet after the Great Hanshin Earthquake hit in 1995. Harborland, arguably the city’s biggest projects after the quake, brought a marriage modernity and tradition, ushering in shopping malls, high-rises and a mini fairground idyllically nestled next to the sea. Now, it remains a popular tourist destination.

Serving the best beef in the globe

Japan Times once said, “There are many different kinds of beef in Japan. Matsuzaka beef is from Mie Prefecture, Jinseki beef is from Hiroshima and Chia beef is from Okayama. But Kobe beef, from Kobe, is the most famous”. While it’s all a mystery to most, legend has it that the cows drink beer and are massaged with sake. Today you can find this pricey delicacy on the menu at discerning restaurants around the world.

Shopping Districts Galore

Motomachi, nestled near Chinatown is one of the best places to shop at in Kobe. Similar to shopping districts of Ginza and Shinsaibashi, this houses different types of shops and stores. Sannomiya, on the other hand, while it boasts hundreds of options, its most famous destination remains the Sannomiya, the large shopping arcade, where one can find books, fashion, home electronics, food, among others. After visiting these two, you can treat yourself to a pampering at PAÑPURI located in 3-8-13 Sannomiyacho, Chuo-ku, Kobe-shi, Hyogo, Japan.
